For trips abroad outside the EU and for long-distance trips, for example to the USA, children will generally need a passport equipped with an electronic chip from 2024. The electronic, biometrically readable passport (also called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsi.bund.de\/DE\/Themen\/Oeffentliche-Verwaltung\/Elektronische-Identitaeten\/Elektronische-Ausweisdokumente\/Elektronischer-Reisepass\/elektronischer-reisepass_node.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ePassport<\/a>) can now be applied for for every child. There should be a transition period for the children&#8217;s passports that are still valid. Especially if you are planning trips to Great Britain, Turkey, Albania or Serbia, among others, your children will need a normal passport, as these travel destinations are not in the EU or the Schengen area.<\/p>\n<p>The child must be present to <a href=\"https:\/\/nouakchott.diplo.de\/mr-de\/service\/02-PaesseAusweise\/passantrag-kind-seite\/1214076\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">apply for a passport<\/a>, especially if the children are under 16 years old, as the application is made on their behalf by their parents or legal guardians. To apply, the passport application, a biometric passport photo, the original birth certificate or a certified copy thereof, the consent of a legal guardian, and proof of residence are required. A passport will cost 37.50 euros per child. After the passport is issued, it is valid for 6 years for children up to the age of 24.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.personalausweisportal.de\/Webs\/PA\/DE\/buergerinnen-und-buerger\/der-personalausweis\/beantragung\/beantragung-node.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">identity card<\/a> is required for travel within the EU; this can be issued from the birth of the child.
