Living and working in Brazil

Brazil offers several visa categories for professional work in the country. It is important to distinguish between a business trip and a job. The most important visa categories are the business travel visa and the temporary work visa. However, it is also possible to obtain a digital nomad visa for Brazil.

The type of visa required depends primarily on whether the assignment is for a foreign or Brazilian company, the number of days the stay in Brazil lasts, and the activities to be performed there.

Business Travel Visa (VIVIS)

Activities such as attending trade fairs, meetings, and conferences are considered business trips. Taking up employment is not possible with a business travel visa. First, it should be checked whether the traveler is exempt from visa requirements due to their nationality. In this case, the business trip may be undertaken without applying for a visa. German citizens are exempt from visa requirements. If a visa is required for business trips due to their nationality, it must be applied for in advance at the Brazilian embassy or consulate. The maximum stay for a business trip is 90 days. The visa should be applied for three months before the planned entry.

Temporary Work Visa (VITEM V)

If more than just simple business activities are planned in Brazil, but the traveler intends to work, a temporary work visa must be applied for. This can involve entering into an employment contract with a Brazilian company or maintaining the foreign employment contract. A temporary work visa can be applied for, for example, for well-qualified technicians to work in Brazil for up to two years. First, a Brazilian company must apply for a work permit from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security. Once the work permit has been obtained, the visa can be applied for at an embassy or consulate at the applicant’s place of residence. The visa is usually issued for one year. Entry to Brazil must take place during this time. After entry, the visa must be converted into a residence permit valid beyond this period. In this case, too, the process should be started at least three months before the planned entry.

Digital Nomad Visa (VITEM XIV)

If you plan to work remotely for a non-Brazilian company, you can apply for a Digital Nomad visa without formal work registration in Brazil. To obtain this visa, you must prove that you have an employment relationship with a foreign employer and have sufficient financial resources to live in Brazil. The visa is usually valid for one year and can be renewed for another year. The entire process usually takes four to eight weeks.

Did you know?
Brazil has four time zones. The country is so large that the sun sets at different times in different parts of the country. Furthermore, the Brazilian Amazon rainforest is home to one-tenth of the world’s animal species. There is even an island called “Snake Island,” which has the highest concentration of venomous snakes in the world.
