South Korea introduces visas for digital nomads on January 1, 2024
Who is eligible? Foreign employees who are employed in a foreign company, can work remotely and have been working in the same industry for at least a year, together with their family members.
Applicants for the digital nomad visa must have an annual income of at least 84.96 million won (about 59,000 euros) and personal health insurance with liability of at least 100 million won (about 70,000 euros).
The visa is valid for one year from the date of entry and can be extended for another year.
The digital nomad visa is considered a “workation” visa and allows qualified foreign workers to stay in different regions of South Korea and stimulate the economy. However, they are not allowed to work for South Korean employers during their stay unless they receive a separate work visa.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old and submit documents proving the employment relationship. In addition, a certificate of good conduct must be presented and proof of private health insurance must be provided.
The new visa system will undergo a test phase to check its effectiveness and impact. Based on this assessment, the authorities will decide whether to make the digital visa permanent.
