Changes from October 2022
A new regulation will apply to travelers entering the USA from October 01, 2022: When entering the United States from visa waiver countries without a visa, an ESTA application must now also be submitted by land.
This innovation was announced by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and thus standardizes the entry regulations for all modes of traffic. What previously applied only to flights and sea travel is now also binding for car, bus and train travel across the U.S. border: anyone wishing to enter the country without a visa needs a valid ESTA.
Visa-free entry to the USA with ESTA
Visitors from visa waiver countries such as Germany, Austria and Switzerland do not necessarily need to apply for a visa, but can also travel to the U.S. with the uncomplicated entry permit ESTA. ESTA stands for “Electronic System for Travel Authorization” and is much easier to apply for than a visa for travelers from member states of the “Visa Waiver Program”. As of October 2022, it will apply not only by sea and air, but also by land.
ESTA at a glance:
– Duration of stay up to max. 90 days
– ESTA application at least 72 hours before arrival
– Entry as often as desired within two years
– Only for tourist purposes or for one-time business events
– Working in the USA only with visa
